DIY Laundry Room Makeover On a Budget

Today I’m going to be sharing with ya’ll this easy DIY Laundry Room Makeover on a budget.

This was not a planned home improvement project. My small laundry room has never been very functional. So, I just decided, kinda spur of the moment, to give it a face-lift over the weekend.

This project cost me less than $20 and was finished in 24 hours. And I am absolutely loving the end result!

Wood

This is the wood I used to build the shelves. As you can see, there are a few completely different types of wood here. I just used some extra fence posts and other leftover wood that I already had in my shed. I used a 1×6 for the smaller shelf, and the two larger shelves are 1×12.

But lumber is pretty cheap, so you should be able to get a 1×6 for around $5 and 1x12s for around $10 at Lowe’s or Home Depot. So that’s still pretty inexpensive if you have to go and buy the wood.

Tools and Materials

These are the other tools and materials I used for this project. I used this Black and Decker jigsaw to cut my boards. This one only cost me about $20 and it works great for small projects like this where you’re just making simple cuts.

I also used this little Black and Decker orbit sander. Since some of the wood I used was rough cut lumber fence posts, I had to sand it a little smoother before painting.

But if you buy finished lumber, you won’t even need to sand it so you can skip this step.

Painting

After I cut and sanded my boards, I painted them with Behr Marquee paint in the color “Off white.”

Again, I just used these little samples because I already had them on hand from a previous home project. But really any interior paint and color you choose will work.

I didn’t get any video of me cutting, sanding, or painting the wood, because I didn’t think about it until afterwards.

But here are the boards once they were painted and drying.

Mounting and Hanging Laundry Room Shelves

First, I used a stud finder to make sure I would be screwing into a stud and not just into the drywall. You could also use some drywall anchors to make your shelves more stable.

So then I just measured and market out where I wanted my shelves to go.

I just used some little 1×2’s as a platform to set my shelves onto. You could also buy some corner brackets to mount your shelves, but again…I just used what I already had on hand.

Next, I screwed my 1×2’s into place with my electric screwdriver, making sure they were evenly measured and level.

Once all the mounting boards were in, then I just put my new shelves in place….and whala! Super quick and easy DIY project that makes a huge impact!

Laundry Room Shelf Decor

Most of the decor items you see on the shelves I bought at the Dollar Tree!

This includes the cloth buckets across the top, the galvanized buckets, the small succulents in pots, and the 4 smaller framed prints.

For these small framed prints, I just typed some text, printed the words on white paper, and put the prints into 4 dollar tree frames.

The larger frame in the middle was one I had already purchased previously, but just hadn’t found a home for.

And the large glass dispenser is what I use to store my homemade laundry detergent. I need to make a new batch, so I’ll share a video of my DIY laundry detergent with yall soon too.

By using materials I already had at home, the decor for the shelves was really my only expense for this whole project…bringing the cost to less than $20 total.
